FAQs

What happens if the weather is bad?

Your comfort and experience are our top priorities. Stargazing tours are weather dependent – if the sky is too cloudy, rainy, or unsafe, the tour will be cancelled. In this case, you’ll receive a full refund or the option to reschedule to another night that suits you. (See Terms of Service for more details.)

Where does the tour take place? Do I need to be in Tekapo?

Our stargazing tours are held at a private dark-sky location near Twizel. The skies here are equally dark and clear — you don’t need to be in Tekapo to enjoy a world-class stargazing experience.

What should I wear?

Even in summer, nights in the Mackenzie District can get surprisingly cold . We strongly recommend dressing in warm layers, including a hat, gloves, and sturdy shoes. Bringing an extra jacket is a great idea to stay comfortable during the winter. Blankets will be provided.

Does the Moon affect what I’ll see?

Yes – the Moon phase makes a big difference. Around the Full Moon, the bright light can reduce the visibility of fainter stars and deep sky objects, meaning fewer stars may be seen compared to darker, Moonless (New Moon) nights. However, during these times, you’ll get fantastic close-up views of the Moon itself through the telescope and there are still many stars and objects to see and learn about. For the best views of the Milky Way, consider booking near a New Moon phase.

What will I see on the tour?

On clear, dark nights you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Milky Way, Southern Cross, Magellanic Clouds, star clusters, and even distant galaxies. Planets and the Moon may also be visible, but this depends on their position — your guide will let you know which planets are in the sky on the night of your tour.

How long does the tour last?

The full experience runs for about 75 minutes, including a welcome briefing, laser-guided sky tour, and telescope viewing and astrophoto.

Is the tour suitable for children?

This tour is best suited for ages 6 and up, due to its scientific nature and periods of listening and explanation.

Do I need any experience with telescopes or astronomy?

Not at all. No prior knowledge is needed — our tours are designed for complete beginners as well as space enthusiasts. Your guide will explain everything in an easy, engaging way.

Is photography allowed?

Yes! You’re welcome to bring your camera or smartphone. Please avoid using flash photography, as it disrupts night vision. Your guide can also offer basic tips on capturing the stars.
